Vacation 2008 – Photos #11

Here's your answer from yesterday. It's a whale. In these 3 photos you'll see the whale starting a head first dive for fish. However, in yesterday's photos you'll notice that they come back to the surface on their back with their mouths open. The seagulls are there just waiting for a few fish to pop out of the whale's mouth

Nora and I attended their Saturday Noon Mass in May. The church itself isn’t very large; however, it is beautiful.
The 15th Station of the Cross is rarely found on display in most churches. It is considered the completeness for the stations. There are also other variiations of the stations of the cross, which I will be writting about when time permits.

One of the main reasons the castle was built was that John Jay Hammond, Jr. loved organs and wanted a house large enough to have a room where he could have a huge organ. No, it's not a 'Hammond Organ' and he is not related to that branch of the Hammond family according to a tour guide.

The Hammond Castle is located in Gloucester, MA. It was one of the highlights of the trip. I really enjoyed touring this medieval castle (although built in the 1900's).
John Jay Hammond, Jr. built the castle and had a fantastic background as the second most prolific inventor (behind Thomas Edison). I don't have any direct line Hammonds in my genealogy database, although I have several in my collateral lines (cousins, etc).
In one of the rooms there was a pedigree of both John & his wife. I noticed that his ancestry went back through Anne Arundel County, Maryland, which was of the larger populations of the Hammond family. I have not yet located an online pedigree of John to determine if we tie in as cousins.

Here is a close-up of the tree pressing against the house, that was talked about in yesterday's blog entry.

Here's something you don't see today. It's called a 'Gentleman's Door'. Notice how thin it is.

By the same token, you won't see a door like this today either. It's called a 'Lady's Door' and is much wider than the gentlemen's door. No, it has nothing to do with women being 'wider' than men. In early America, women wore large hoop skirts. Therefore, they needed a larger door.

A fawn followed this beagle home -- right through the doggie door -- in the Bittinger, MD area. The owner came home to find the visitor had made himself right at home. This hit the 6 o'clock news big time.
