Here are photos from St Vincent de Paul’s Catholic Church in downtown Baltimore City, Maryland.
This series of photos runs from July 27th to August 1st.
Nora and I visited here on a Saturday afternoon in June. We were both impressed with its beauty.
St. Vincent de Paul’s stations of the cross will run from October 15, 2008 to October 28, 2008.

These are basically the same shot; however, I 'warmed' the one up a little.

Nora, her Dad, and I attended a Saturday evening Mass at St. Paul’s in early June. I believe I photographed a wedding there about 30 years ago. It looked familiar, but then again, it didn’t. I understand it has been remodeled about ten years ago.
St. Paul’s stations of the cross will run from February 18, 2009 to March 3, 2009. No, that’s not a misprint. I have one station of the cross entry publishing every day until then. Somehow I missed station number 14 and must return to photograph it before then. Also, I need to get an exterior photo.
Below are two photos of the statue of Jesus over the altar. I zoomed in to pick up the detail.

As many of you already know my job of 15 years was 'eliminated' on 27 June 2008. In all, quite a few good employees were dismissed in the following week.
Seeing the situation develop I was prepared for what happened. Nora and I made the ncessary changes in our lifestyle and expenses in the weeks leading up to the layoff. The following Monday I went to the bank and got a certified check, then drove to Silver Spring, Maryland and paid off the house in Baltimore. Two weeks earlier we put the house in West Virginia up for sale. We juggled the finances around and are now on solid ground. It's going to be tight, especially after unemployment runs out. I've already started receiving checks (3 weeks worth) and can continue to collect for the next 36 weeks.
We left on a planned vacation a few days later and spent a wonderful 11 days traveling through MA and NH. We spent the first night in Plymouth, MA and the next two nights in Gloucester, MA. Whale watching was a huge thrill as was visiting several places of interest.
We then headed up to NH for three nights and went to Mt. Washington. Then we drove back down to Boston where we spent the next 4 nights. Nora and her Dad were able to see many of their family and the time was well spent.
Returning home I spent the next several days working in my office. I completely rebuilt the desktop computer and also worked on the laptop.
At first I thought I had a job opportunity with Ascension Catholic School in Arbutus, MD. They needed a part time computer tech teacher and someone to support the computers. This was supposed to be a 3 day a week part time position, but while I was gone they hired someone full time for the job.
It's going to be difficult at my age (59) to find another job. My dismissal was sort of like signing my death warrant, but I won't give in. I have a few good work years left and will pursue some sort of job. I don't know if that will turn out to be full time or part time.
Several years ago I started "Reb's Web Design" and have done a few websites for organizations, small companies, and individuals. Over the years I lost a few companies which either went out of business or were sold. I've now decided to try and push the web design business again, this time adding 'Computer Tech Support'. Thus the new name will be "Reb's Web Design & Computer Tech Support". Earlier this year I attended a Microsoft boot camp and became certified as a "Microsoft Certified Professional" and "Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Techician". Those credentials will certainly help me, no doubt.
I've redesigned my business card, ordered some return address labels, opened up a P.O. Box and started subscribing to a few good computer magazines. I'm also signing up for some informative websites for troubleshooting.
I now must revamp and update my company website, add an insert into my existing brochure (which doesn't mention computer tech support), and come up with a few different letters of introduction depending on the service I'm trying to push. Years ago I designed a few sample sites such as PetWebs.us and MedWebs.us. I've put them back up on the internet. I currently have a 'pets' based website as a customer (Abbey Animal Hospital), but now need a good example of a medical related website. I have a few ideas in mind as to who to approach. I might even offer a free website design to a doctor or dentist, just to get a good example out there for all to see. There are tons of medical practices in the area and many huge professional buildings full of doctors in various fields. One good 'live' website will be all I need for my advertising. I'll prepare a letter directly strictly to the medical profession and hand out. I'll also do some sort of mailing to veteranians for the PetWebs style website. I'm never at a loss for ideas, but welcome any suggestions that you might have. Advertising is limited due to cost factors. I must get some money in before I can do any sort of wide scale promotion.
I have received a letter from the unemployment department about a special program they have for unemployed persons looking to go into business for themselves. I've sent them a response back and hope to be accepted into the program. It looks worthwile and should give me some additional tools for getting the business off the ground. I don't expect to get rich or have people knocking down my doors, but something is better than nothing.
The other day I designed a website for a new land surveying company called "Harrity Land Surveying, Inc." I spent the best part of yesterday helping them order their desktop computer, then checking out a printer/scanner at Office Depot & Staples.
Today is being spent working on straightening up my office. I've prepared a 'Priorities' spreadsheet on items that need to be done. I have over 100 items on the list, but have done some of them already.
I need to write the insert for the brochure, prepare a cover letter for mailing, and revamp the website before going after business. It's going to take quite some time to get assignments, but we're prepared for the long haul.

Here is something very rare - an albino peacock. God makes some beautiful creatures, doesn't He?

I've been looking forward to this weekend for about a month. For the first time ever, Reb, Sara, & Jackson are staying a complete weekend with Nora and I at the West Virginia cabin. They arrived a little after 8 PM last night with Jackson wound up and in rare form.
It seems the dogs scare him a little. He has two dogs (Hammish and Dakota); however, they're large dogs and tend to ignore him. Our dogs are much smaller, at his eye level, and Brandi (the cocker) does anything but ignore him.
One game Jackson loves to play is 'horsey' which he jumps around like a horse. He'll run, or rather semi-skip through the house. We have fun chasing him around.
I fixed a nice dinner of Bubba burgers and polish kabasa. Seems Jackson loves 'dip'. This isn't the regular 'dig' you and I might eat. His dip is nothing more than ketchup. He loves it and constantly 'dipped' his hot dog in it.
Naturally Grandpop's been preparing this visit for some time. I threw out some deer corn yesterday afternoon to entice a deer presense in the back yard. It worked as we had a nice size female doe show up about 9 PM. This morning I'll have to put Jackson to work in helping to throw out some more deer corn.
I prepared for the visit at the store yesterday. A few months ago I introduced Jackson to lentil soup, a family favorite for generations. If he's going to have the surname "Orrell" he must be exposed to family favorites. Last night I introducted him to braunsweiger. Most people hate it; however Jackson, bit off a nice chunk, plunged it into his dip, and eat it all. As you can see from the photo below, he not only ate it, but also smeared it everywhere.

I also bought a package of ginger snaps. Again another 'Orrell' favorite. He couldn't have it though, as he has a peanut allergy and the product was made in a factory that used peanut oil. I'll have to check the cartoons closer in the future.
Today, he'll get introduced into other 'Orrell' favorites. Since he like 'dip' of ketchup, it seems logical that he'll like the Orrell favorite of V-8 juice. After all, they both have a tomato base. Reb & I will go easy on him and give him the straight up out of the bottle version. When he gets older Reb & I will give him our favorite version which involves taking the V-8 juice and adding a lot of 'hot sauce' to it. You can buy a 'spicy' or 'zesty' version of V-8, but we like to spice up our own. By the way, stay away from the 'low sodium' version of V-8. It's horrible.
Let's see - we also have some tapioca and some rice pudding for later. Reb & I love that also.
Also, we'll give him another favorite which can involve another type of 'dip'. I bought a block of mild sharp chesse. We'll let Jackson 'dip' this into some syrup. That's been an Orrell favorite for decades.
As an added bonus, we'll also let him try some YooHoo later today. His father and I love to slam back a bottle of that now and then. As you can see, I've been getting ready for this weekend for quite a while.
Today, we'll all go down to Winchester, Virginia and walk around Old Towne. We'll tour the gardens and other areas, then return back here and go in the outdoor pool. Nora and I went yesterday afternoon and the water was wonderful.
The pleasures of being a grandparent are endless. Nora said she wants to teach him 'hide and seek' this afternoon. I guess we'll let her in on the action and have some fun also.

My son pointed out that I have been remiss in my grandfatherly duties. Seems I started a section of photos on the non-blog portion of this website for Jackson, but haven't updated since the first set of photos.
He's right. I've only posted photos to the "Jackson Reverdy Orrell" portion of this blog and have neglected to also put the photos in the other section. I'll remedy that this week.

Here are photos from St Joseph’s Monastery Catholic Church in Irvington, Baltimore City, Maryland.
This series of photos runs from July 14th to July 18th.
I grew up no more than about 8 blocks from the Monastery, as we called it. Actually my back yard ran into Mt. St. Joseph’s High School’s property.
It’s been years since I was in St. Joseph’s Monastery. I hope to return and photograph the inside and their stations of the cross.

Here's a rather unique looking church. St. Michael's Ukranian Church is located on Eastern Avenue, directly across from Patterson Park in Baltimore City, Maryland.
I would love to go inside to see this church. Perhaps Nora and I will go to a early service one day and see if they'll give me permission to photograph the church afterwards.

Convent Trip
Sisters Mary Catherine, Maria Theresa, Katherine Marie, Rose Frances & Mary Kathleen left the Convent on a trip to St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City and were sight-seeing on a Tuesday in July.
It was hot and humid in town and their traditional garb was making them so uncomfortable, they decided to stop in at Patty McGuire's Pub for a cold soft drink.
Patty had recently added special legs to her barstools, which were the talk of the fashionable eastside neighborhood. All 5 Nuns sat up at the bar and were enjoying their Cokes when Monsignor Riley and Father McGinty entered the bar through the front door.
They, too, came for a cold drink when they were shocked and almost fainted at what they saw.
